Attention Deficit at eTech
Here’s an IM conversation talking about how eTech was:
me: i spoke to a friend who just came back from eTech
me: he said almost everyone in the room had their laptop open
me: and no one was paying attention
me: he said there were even two guys who spent all their time on their laptop in the lobby
me: heh
my friend: wasn’t this year’s theme in eTech Attention Trust?
me: yah
me: hahah
me: which makes it even more ironic
I wonder if anyone got through to anybody at e-Tech because it didn’t seem like anyone was paying attention…heh heh…

Oh they were paying attention. Just… Partial. Heard the Linda Stone talk?

Ah, good point, yes “continuous partial attention”
because we don’t want to miss any opportunities and feel connected. But don’t you think at a conference about attention attendees would pay less partial attention? heh heh…
hmmm or maybe it was more *quality* partial attention that was paid

Well. It is more about understanding how attention works, who gets it and why. I guess this guys will always be ADHD, wich I see as the pervy version of CPA, and that´s ok. Also, keep in mind that “The Attention Economy” is the name they use to describe exactly that. Attention (wich I´m giving now to you thank you very much) it is a much appreciated resource. We dont have many, so we might as well use it wisely. People had the laptops on, and pay attention when the guys actually knew what were they talking about. When not… Well. Most of they had actual work to do. So sorry for boring guys.

You actually raise a point that i hadn’t thought too much about which is now in this day and age, quality of attention probably isn’t as important as the fact that I’ve received your attention. It seems like now the *possible* indication/manifestation of *not* paying attention is being on the laptop. Well at any rate thanks for your comments and attention
