Bitacle & The Blogosphere
This is probably one of my latter ones in the ongoing war between Bitacle and the Blogosphere. Over the weekend it was amazing to see how quickly things had spread. I originally posted about Bitacle on Sept 10 and only heard crickets. Over the weekend “bitacle” became the top 10 search. There was even a blog that was dedicated to stopbitacle that has the latest information regarding this. It was really neat to be a part of that meme to a point where there were plugins created and an international dialog.
Unfortunately, I don’t know what is being done about Bitacle, but it’s not something that prevents other sploggers to come along. This is what Bitacle is sending out (translation courtesy of mariano):
Just in case the google translation messed up something.. “E-mail:
Bitacle is an rss/atom web reader.
As you can read emails in hotmail, gmail, etc.
Theres a lot of RSS Readers in the market, via web or the OS of your choice
Our license only applies for the programming, but the content of the information and the license you apply is yoursIts up to you to control the contents you supply to ablog reader and the traffic you get from them. No one forces you to sindicate content
Yours truly
Bitacle”
I agree when Mariano asks: How can they respond in that way?? I think it’s a pretty unreasonable request for bloggers to control their distribution with feed readers, and uh hullo! feed readers are a distribution channel that ensures that the viewer returns to the author’s asset.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr is all i have to say.

“feed readers are a distribution channel that ensures that the viewer returns to the author’s asset.”
Uh, really? That must be one of the Unwritten Rules of Feed Readers, because there certainly aren’t any written rules.
Sure, the idea is that free market pressure should encourage feed reader authors to create a feed reader that behaves like every other feed reader, but the Bitacle guys are right: they can do what they want.
If CC-NC licensed RSS feeds are NOT allowed to be used by commercial RSS readers, then the FeedDemon and other payware reader guys are in trouble, too. If they are allowed, then the Bitacle guys should be okay, too.
Give the Bitacle guys a break already. We spend so much time complaining about how “not enough people use RSS” and here’s a startup that builds a product that leverages it and everyone beats them down.
This is why good technologies can often die on the vine: antisocial geek behavior.

Heh heh, Dossy I can count on you to have an interesting perspective! I did hear it was illegal for feed readers if they were taking a blog’s full content that they are not allowed to serve ads. That’s what I’ve heard….
Also, don’t you think that not enough people use RSS because of a geeky name like that? And the deplorable inhumane process?
