Women 2.0 BBQ

Friday, June 1st, 2007

So I went to my first Women 2.0 BBQ and it was pretty cool! I have met them in the past as I helped arrange a meeting space for them at AOL, but did not get a chance to go. Angie and Annie graciously opened up their house for us. The food was great, and the group was small enough to meet some cool folks. I met several women who own their own business or doing their own thing. I met Rochelle Kopp who has built Japan Intercultural Consulting which helps Japanese and American Businesses understand each other better. I was really impressed that she had built this thing herself and had connections all over the world, even in Mexico! It was encouraging and inpsiring.

Well I took some video footage and wanted to share a little taste as to what the events are like. The beginning question didnt’ turn out too great but it reads “What happens when tech entrepreneurial women get together?”

A big thank you to Angie, Annie, Shivani (altho I missed you there!), Shaherose and Wen-Wen.

Lunch 2.0 at Netgear Video

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Updated 06/02: Cleaned up some of the writing.

It’s summertime, that means the number of geek events rises, just due to good weather! I dusted off my videocam and took some footage at Netgear’s Lunch 2.0. It’s become a lot bigger since we got into the SFChron (feel free to dig it!).

It’s become a bit of a PR thing. Towards the end I think there were some photo shoots, and I’m not talking about Terry’s trusty photography skillz. This is really due to size. Also since I have been around from the earlier days I knew what it was like before. Don’t get me wrong, the buzz is definately exciting! But, I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing for conversations to occur, as it can feel really big. I’m glad that there are more Lunch 2.0 events cropping up as it’s only localization can you have community. There are also some other off-shoots.

Well here’s the video. This time there was no talking, just music. The more exciting editing is towards the end. There were other video cams there doing live interviews along with Podtech.

Lunch 2-Oh at Meeb-Oh

Monday, January 29th, 2007

So the call went out and Meebo hosted another Lunch2.0 last week. Meebo’s story and product is a paragon for the new Web 2.0 movement for startups. A humble and smart team, building a great product, which they are passionate about … oh and on a minimal budget. All the hard work paid off in another round of funding. Congratulations guys!

They decided to share their good fortune in the form of some Thai Food at for Lunch 2.0. Here is some video footage for those that weren’t there.

Thanks so much for hosting!

Other bloggers talking about this:
Jeremiah Owyang—He has a great set of photos
Mark Jen

This was the last Lunch 2.0 they hosted. As you can tell Meebo has grown!

P.S. A lot of people are making some cool screencasts of Meebo… pertty cool.

How do your wrap something like this up? Here is the video.

Big thank you again to Hitachi Data Systems and Jeremiah Owyang!

Note: The view counter is broken for now, but it’s still keeping the count. I’m told it will be turned back on in this Thursday.

A request to NOT videoblog?

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

Wow! I’m shocked at the meme I’ve been uh skimming/following of people asking NOT to videoblog. Scoble sums up some points here very well. But I wanted to address some of the remarks I have been reading, and honestly I am shocked:

Brad Templeton basically states that video is not reader/viewer friendly (without a large over head such as transcripts, etc…).

My response: Blogs are not necessarily reader friendly (trust me). And requesting professional editing and this large overhead to be viewer friendly basically creates what we have on television. Media controlled by the few. To ask people not to videoblog because the bar is so low that ~95% of it is boring, in some ways I think slaps the First Amendment in the face.

Alec Saunders The lack of indexing/searching creates an inability for the viewer to digest easily, also he states:

“For me, turning the internet into TV isn’t interesting.”

My response: Just because it’s rough on the viewer doesn’t mean to not produce content. Sure technology is behind, but that didn’t stop people from creating personalized webpages with Geocities back in the day. The technology is always trying to catch up with human needs, why wait around for it? Capitalize on this need.

The second comment about internet becoming TV, was interesting for me becuase I think what’s been explosive about video on the internet is the fact that now I can have social interaction with the video or what I’m watching. I can leave comments, share, and basically have a conversation much about what I’m watching. This is pretty much how humans like to consume television, talk about the show, watch shows with their friends. The internet now allows that. This may not be interesting to you, but it’s occurring and a human need, that vlogging allows.

Ending Thoughts:

Also the beauty about vlogging is that it’s still new. Do I HAVE to produce a 2 min show everyday to be a vlogger? I don’t think so. Do I need high end stuff? not really. Jay Dedman said something to me once about why he liked vlogging so much: You don’t feel compelled to continously do a show. . You can use a rich medium to tell stories or even to capture what went on. That’s why I like doing it.

Really, ending now…

I think the reason why blogging won out … not necessarily because publishers wanted to express themselves, but I think it’s humans / readers/ viewers would rather have honesty and rawness to remind each other that we are all humans. Why is the numa numa lipsynching song so good? Why did lonelygirl15 become so popular? I think they all reflected a bit of rawness and honesty that is *seemingly uncontrived*. That’s why I think people like it.

…and goodbye!

Okay it’s early in the morning, and I don’t think i’m making too much sense here…besides I have a video to finish editing ;) . Now don’t you wish this post was a video so you didnt’ have to read all that ? hehheh

Happy Birthday Meebo!

Wow Lunch 2.0 has done it again. A packed house at Mozilla Foundation. It was so great to see the place where our beloved Firefox is being built. Thank you for hosting!

The talking bits start about 40 seconds in and lasts for about 2 and a half min. They gave us a tour of the diggs and also had some special prizes, which you can see towards the end of the video =).
